Stripping the old paint isn't absolutely necessary, but if there are many coats of old paint, it might be preferable. There are a couple of ways to prep a previously painted wood surface. 1) sand the entire area lightly with 220 grit paper, then paint with the desired color. 2) Purchase a can of ';deglosser'; from your local paint store. Go over the surfaces according to label instructions, then paint. It isn't necessary to prime previously painted surfaces, but you should do the above prep to assure good adhesion. How does one paint wood molding?
Strip the old paint and then apply new primer and paint in the color you want. A heat gun does work if you have the patience to use it. You also will need a scraper and a fine pointed tool for removing the paint from crevices.
go to paint store ask for killz under coating or try paint remover
