I assume you mean varnished or lacquered when you say ';finished';. You can use oil or latex. The important part is to remove all oil and dirt and then, a coat of bullseye, or zinnzer. They are white pigmented shellacs that will adhere to the oriiginal finish. Oil based. But be sure to sand down the furniture slightly before you apply paint.
