What is the very best way to paint over existing wood laminate panelling?

I need to know the details: covering the 'lines', latex or oil base primer and paint. What is the very best way to paint over existing wood laminate panelling?
First and foremost: clean the surface of wax and oils. Use TSP (can be got in a paint store or hardware store. Wash it down with a decent concentration of the stuff. Let it dry.

Can you scratch it with sandpaper? If it is floor laminate type stuff this alone is a job. Hand sand it';use 80 grit'; While that sounds harsh, l don't like to put a lot of muscle energy into it and the surface is hard so you are hardly gonna make a dent in it with that grit. Get it scratched similar to the concentration of the hairs on your dads arm. That is sufficiently sanding.. This is especially important if it is glossy laminate. If you are speaking of ';fake wood paneling'; still it must be cleaned first(ALWAYS) and then use 100 grit same sanding technique. Get it scratched up all over.

The lines are there, I am assuming you mean the cracks or the grooves? Filling it is a bloody pain '; I would not bother. A sow's ear is a sow's ear. Never gonna be a silk purse.

Now paint. I never believe in the the primer and paint in one can stuff. They are weak in one area. And I don't need weak.

Use ';Alkyd primer';, yes it is oil based, yes it is a pain to clean up.

';but you were concerned with painting it, not cleaning up';

So you need a natural bristle brush for oil(a cheapy will do, and a roller of 1/4'; pile on the ';roller sleeve'; and a roller tray.

First brush in the edges (ceiling, walls floor and inside corners where the roller won't reach, also small ledges or edges). And probably, just to be safe, brush a thin coat down the lines(as most of the time they are black grooves, also take off the outlet plate covers and as many nails that stick out as you can....so the roller has a smooth surface with no interruptions. So do all the brushing work first. Then wrap some plastic wrap around the wet paint bristles so it does not dry out and put the brush on the side(you might need it later on, so just unwrap it and use it then rewrap so it does not dry hard.

. If this is a wall, find a screw in broom handle which fits the screw in in the handle of the roller. Now no ladder is needed and you can stand on the floor and rock and roll. Sometimes the broomhandle may have to come off when you are doing tight areas like in closets(oh, yeah- I paint everything.)

Half a job is half a job. Then leave the window open for the rest of the day and a small crack in the door so the stink will dissipate and close window that evening. and give the painted surfaces a day, 2 is better,3 even better'er. to dry. Toss the brush and roller sleeve in the garbage. You won't be using them anymore on this job(that is why I said a cheapy will do). Let the roller frame dry. (Paint does dry) It will be used again..

Then go in after at least 24 hours, and scratch the wall ';like you were at school and doing it on the blackboard.';with the old fingernails. Not super hard, just a quick swipe down the wall.

Paint should not come off(or even half of the paint into your nails) If it does, it is not dry yet. A little heat(like regular room temperature will help).

. Once it is fully dry you have a solid surface to put on what you wish - be it latex or oil or wallpaper.. With a latex topcoat - that paint goes on thicker so will fill the lines better, hiding them in paint as you can use a fuzzier roller(1/2';) than you do with oil paint. And if the lines did not hide on the first coat of latex; wait a day and paint it again(and maybe a 3rd time if you feel inclined with a day wait again in-between coats). But you should put on 2 coats of latex so the color is even and all the primer is protected. I say a day because I am figuring a house with no heat. Never apply too soon otherwise it just rips off the coat underneath and it looks like dog poo. When in doubt read the can.

Oh, when using latex - 100% acrylic is a must. What is the very best way to paint over existing wood laminate panelling?
If you don't care about the lines, use a primer first then apply the paint. If the lines are an issue, I would replace the paneling with drywall. Filling the lines with putty and sanding is a lot of work.

Either latex or oil base paint will work. Make sure if it's interior you use interior paint and the same with exterior. If it is exterior, oil base paints works best, but oil base paints are harder to clean up. If you check with Consumer Reports, they give you the ratings on the best products to use. Good luck painting...
lightly sand the paneling with a fine grade sand paper. Sand it just enough to dull the existing finish. This will make the paint stick much better.

Paint with latex primer and latex paint.

I would just paint over the lines and leave them exposed. Thats what I did in my house and I think it looks great. If the lines really bother you then you can fill them with drywall mud, but some extra skill level is required for that. If you don't do it just perfect then the patched lines will show through after you paint them.
I didn't cover the lines of our wood paneling, although hypothetically you could fill them and sand, etc. Sounds like a whole lotta work for that.

However, I did use a premium ';one coat/primer included'; paint. It covered nicely, the paint adhered without problems. I also used a very dark color though, deep brown on brown paneling. There is no trace of the ';wood grain'; coloring showing through.

If it doesn't have to be oil, you could use either Delta Ceramcoat or Americana paints. They are water-based acrylic paints that are perfect for Basswood. And the bottles are inexpensive.

How can you paint over laminate wood panelled walls? Is it possible?

Hi!

I'm decorating/painting a friends apartment and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about painting! Remember those old laminate wood panelled walls from the eighties? Well half of the walls are covered in it. I want to do a good job with this space, I was considering gluing material to the laminate but I didn't even know if THAT would stick. I need a paint expert please.

Thanks so very much in advance. How can you paint over laminate wood panelled walls? Is it possible?
Try stain kill first then use a good paint over it. Hope this helped !How can you paint over laminate wood panelled walls? Is it possible?
I think you can, but you have to do a lot of prep work on the surface (sanding, priming). I would recommend you stop by your local Home Depot or Ace Hardware %26amp; talk to one of the experts. They usually have helpful brochures.

Should i paint my wood paneling and why?

it is my parents house and my mom says she'll buy the paint if i paint, but then my dad says no your not painting your room? so what do you think i should do and whyShould i paint my wood paneling and why?
It will definitely update your rooms appearance by painting it. If your parents agree to this idea you will need to sand it lightly first if it is glossy. If not apply a coat of primer and then once that dries you can apply the paint. You are correct in choosing a neutral color such as tan or gray. When and if your parents want to sell their house, your room will not deter potential buyers. Buyers don't want paneling. They will think, o.k. if we purchase this house we will need to get rid of this out dated paneling. Good luck, in convincing your father that this is a good decision.Should i paint my wood paneling and why?
I painted all the paneling in a house I bought back in the 70s and never regretted it. However, in that house the ';remodelers'; had put different colors of paneling in the same room! Wood paneling can look very dated but once it's painted, there's no undoing it. Also, paneling tends to not show dirt, etc., like a painted wall will. Can you be satisfied with rejuvenating the wood instead? Perhaps this would satisfy both you and your dad.
if you paint it a darker color it makes the room look small, but cozy. if you paint neutral, it will feel light and airy.

im confused on what your wanting to do, but wood paneling thats trim, shouldnt be painted...if your room is actual wood insted of dry wall, maybe try a stain insted of a paint, a paint would look bad, were as a stain would look pretty tight
You can paint wood paneling, needs tobe cleaned and primed first then painted. People do it all the time to change a room. Your parents need to come to an agreement before you do anything though.
As long as your living in your parents house then do as they say and if they can not agree then do not paint until they do.
I think this is something your parents have to work out. :)

  • Can you paint over laminated wood?

We've inherited some ugly laminate wardrobes, my mum said I could paint them but that I'd need a primer or some sort of base coat that will allow paint to dry on the laminate, does anyone know what I need to get?Can you paint over laminated wood?
If you go into B%26amp;Q and such like, you can buy special paint for laminates.

I was given 2 hideous brown bedside cabinets, I rubbed them down for the paint to key, and painted them a pale blue. Changed the door handles and the transformation is complete, and very good they look too.

The paint is made by Ronseal. It is called ' One Coat Paint for Melamine and MDF'.

The colours are a bit limited to white, pale blue, sage green, black etc.

IAnother idea to bring life back to ugly old wardrobes, is to wallpare them.

Find a wallpaper you like and cover them and varnish it afterwards to protect. You could staple fabric over them as wellCan you paint over laminated wood?
    It would be helpful to us if you defined ';laminate';

Certainly a WOOD veneer; laminated over sub strate wood; is paintable; with the proper PREP.

If the laminate is MICA; you ';CAN'; do; but I promise you'll be dissatisfied over any long term.

    Steven Wolf
You can get primers that would bond onto surfaces like laminate. Look for primers for kitchen cupboards/units, or for use on enamel.

There are also 1 coat paints for difficult surfaces, also designed for use on kitchen units. I do believe Dulux and Crown have a range. See the links:
yes though which product would need to be researched. also what is laminated furniture frames etc. etc. also watch the lead paint stuff if you have small children.
If the surface is clean and dry any spray paint will change the color of the unit.I would not waste my time with a prime coat.Just pick ';YOUR'; color and spray it in a well ventilated room.
The surfaces have to go cleanly(well) and were grease-free, then to me to very fine sandpaper enliven and I would take from water-dis solvable lacquer.

Can I paint a parquet wood floor?

I have a pre-war apt. with hardwood parquet wood floors. The floors are beat up and so thin that the nailheads are coming up . I'm not ready to refinish them or to put down new floors yet but I was thinking of painting the with porch paint as a temporary measure. Can I do this? Will it look all right or will I ruin the floor? Can I paint a parquet wood floor?
It would probably look fine, but it will ruin the floors and make refinishing them a heck of a lot harder. If you plan on refinishing them in the future, I would get a product called Holloway House (near the mop-n-glow). Just squirt it onto the floors and mop it. It will dry to a shine and make the floors look better. You can also try the Orange Glo kit...found in WalMart near the mop-n-glow as well. I would really urge you to NOT paint the floors, especially for a temporary fix. Holloway House will work just fine. Good luck! Can I paint a parquet wood floor?
I would paint it first with kilz, then paint.

What might look really good is to make sure there is no varnish on them, and stain them. You could even stain it blue or green.

If you are planning on refinishing them, you may not want to paint them at all. The paint will absorb into the wood, and you may not be able to get it all out when you do decide to refinish them. That will probably ruin the floor.

Can I remove white undercoat paint from varnished wood?

It's the wooden frame around the velux window we have only just recently had fitted, the paint was for the skirting boards but our decorator painted the wooden frame aswell. It looks terrible and so tacky, is there any way to remove it?Can I remove white undercoat paint from varnished wood?
Wood/furniture stripper will work..it will remove it enough that it will only need a light sanding after to finish removing it totally.

What is the best way to refinish / paint / stain pressed wood -laminate wood furniture?

Fill holes with wood filler. Sand to 150 grit to remove rough spots. Prime bare spots. Paint with 100% acrylic enamel with the gloss you prefer for a long lasting finish.

How do you get wood stain out of paint brushes?

ummm ok were staining wood and we cant get it out of the paintbrushes we used and suggestions? How do you get wood stain out of paint brushes?
I'm pretty sure the only way is turpentine. You might have to leave the brushes soaking in it for a while, which is tricky because turpentine evaporates quickly. You can buy it in Hardware stores.

Check what the side of the can of wood stain says, just to be sure. How do you get wood stain out of paint brushes?
Paint thinner or Varsol is best. You will have to clean the brush and spin it several times before all stain is removed, use a metal can like a coffee can or tomato juice can. To spin the brush, put the handle between the palms of your hands (bristles facing DOWN) and rub back and forth like you are starting a fire with 2 sticks. Doing this fast spins out the thinner and excess stain. Do this several times. It works wonders for keeping your brushes tip top for the next job.

Also if you will be staining with the brushes over a period of several days, you can store the brushes in plastic bags in the freezer, removing half hour or so before starting the job again.
    paint thinner!
With the cost of paint brushes today, I would suggest just tossing them out and buying new ones. A lot cheaper than buying cleaners for them.
turpentine, gasoline, kerosene. Read the label see if any of these things are in the stain, if so, use it.
you coud use a paint thinner or gas but be very carefull

and in some cases you can try terpentine

Can you paint over wood paneling? sounds dumb, but I am a novice trying to sell my house?

Start out by cleaning the paneling well. Then apply a coat of liquid sandpaper to rough up the paneling (the primer and paint will adhere better if you do this). Then prime, and paint as usual. I did my entire living room this way, and haven't had any problems with flaking paint. Can you paint over wood paneling? sounds dumb, but I am a novice trying to sell my house?
You can, but if it looks like painted wood paneling, no one really wants that either. The best thing you can do would be to get some wood filler, and fill in the little grooves between the panels so you can't tell that its paneling anymore, and then paint over it. It looks a million times better that way.Can you paint over wood paneling? sounds dumb, but I am a novice trying to sell my house?
I have had great success painting over wood paneling!! Priming is a must before applying any paint. I have always used Kilz with great results! It seems to have terrific adhesion and provides a good surface to apply paint to. Good luck!!
Yes you can actually,But you have to prime it first.so that the paint stays but it actually gives the wall it's own pattern just choose a nice color or paint like an eggshell like you would in an apt.
Absolutely. You will want to clean it really well. Wiping it down with a de-glosser would be a good idea. Use good ventilation if you do that. Use a good primer first and paint away.
You can, but it makes the room look cheesy

Swimming pool deck is new, treated, still causing splinters. Is there a wood treatment/paint you use?

We have a deck that is 2 years old, I treat it with the best water proofing stain and it still is starting to splinter. It's in direct sunlight all day in VA. HOT SUN. I'm trying to come up with a paint/sand mix or perhaps put down the rubber mats they use on playgrounds? Has anyone had experience with this? I would like to avoid getting that plastic wood stuff at $20 a board.Swimming pool deck is new, treated, still causing splinters. Is there a wood treatment/paint you use?
    Not knowing the deck size or your budget, I'll suggest, first of all that you will never stop the degradation of WOOD, no matter the ';treatment';

I do however, have a couple of suggestions. You allude to them in the Q.

I'd go to a commercial Restaurant supplier and price kitchen mats. OR I have often used what looks like spun/extruded, vinyl, kinda woven mat. It allows drainage, allows drying, is easy to clean, does not hurt bare feet, and often comes in more than just Black. The product I used to use came in 6 ft wide rolls, and was easy to cut.

The end result may be that your cost to cover will be close to replacing with a composite decking material. IE: the reason I suggest . Clearly define the high traffic areas, and look for mats that will be useable in those areas.

Rev. StevenSwimming pool deck is new, treated, still causing splinters. Is there a wood treatment/paint you use?
After 2 years it should not be splintering, the best you can do without replacing with qaulity materials is buy or rent a belt sander and go over it in both directions, then apply a good sealer good as in you get what you pay for.

I'm going to paint my old wood patio furniture. Since it will be in the sun, what type of paint should i use?

Should i use a base coat? Can I use a spray acrylic? In the past, the paint has always bubbled up on the furniture I kept in the sun.I'm going to paint my old wood patio furniture. Since it will be in the sun, what type of paint should i use?
It bubbled because your furniture wasn't dry and you trapped moisture in it or you painted in direct sun light that was too hot. What ever you do make sure you use a water based paint unless you know what kind was put on from the start you don't want to put oil based paint over water based BUT you can put water based over oil, oil based paint will tend to lift the water based paint off. Use some 100 grit paper and scuff up the areas where the paint has bubbled off and you can use an acrylic spray paint or acrylic paint with a brush just don't paint in direct sun it dries too fast. As far as curing most paints take 2 weeks to 30 days to fully cure, Good luck Les the painter If you do chose to put a urathane on please use a water based polyacrylic NOT oil based.I'm going to paint my old wood patio furniture. Since it will be in the sun, what type of paint should i use?
It probably bubbled because you didn't prep the furniture properly. And it will also bubble if you put it out into the sun before the paint has completely cured. Leave the furniture in the shade for at least a good 24 hours, preferably longer to really let the paint dry good and hard. Clean the surfaces, then give everything a good, light sanding, then use a tack cloth to remove the dust. Then use a good primer coat to prep further. Use a paint, spray is better as you won't get brush strokes, that is made for exterior uses. Then seal it with a an exterior polyurethane. This should make for a much longer wearing surface.

How do you get paint off of wood?

Hey! My brother and I were fixing up our house today [while our parents were gone] and we got some latex paint on the molding!!

    What should I do?

Should I wait for it to dry then wipe it off?

I know that water would be a bad idea because it'd just get rubbed into the wood.

    Any suggestions?,

Carri-SophiaHow do you get paint off of wood?
    Warm soapy water.

    Really!

Latex paint is water based, so that's the best way to dissolve it. Soap will help, and you won't need a lot. Don't worry about water hurting the molding, it has probably been varnished. How do you get paint off of wood?

  • How do you get paint off of wood work??

We are trying to salavage trim on a remodeling job, the people before us painted on the trim on but didnt wipe it off. what is the easiest way to remove it? with out damaging the finish of it.How do you get paint off of wood work??
Try scraping without gouging the trim. Depends on what kind of paint is on the trim..start out conservative....goof off for latex, but if it is old, I am not sure that will soften up old paint...then try mineral spirits (doubt this, but worth a try) then paint stripper, applied locally, and applied once should only penetrate the paint, and leave the varnish/urethane surface safe. Try a small area first, and check the results...another option is a heat gun, just make sure the paint lifts, and not the top coat of the trim. How do you get paint off of wood work??
    There are three ways.

    1. Sandpaper. Cheapest, hardest, may damage finish, will damage any surrounding glass. Not great idea.

    2. Hot gun. Will remove paint but won't often remove shellac, varnish, etc. Can't use around glass - the heat will crack the glass. Slow but environmentally friendly.

    3. Chemicals. Paint stripper can work but it will also remove varnish and shellac. Not environmentally friendly, but only way to remove paint around glass. Easiest, but you'll need to wear breathing protection and wear heavy gloves, and protect the areas around the trim with lots of plastic drop cloths and tape.

For 2 or 3, if you use a metal scraper to remove the paint you can damage the wood. Home Depot and other retailers sell maple scrapers that don't damage wood.
Go get liquid sand. Give small aplication with wipe.

    slowly the paint go off.

    just paint over it

What's the best way to get paint off of wood trim?

Apparently former tenants never heard of painter's tape. I don't know how the woodwork was finished nor do I know what kind of paint this is. Any ideas? What's the best way to get paint off of wood trim?
Try Goof-Off. Wet a rag and rub the area. If it is old oil based paint it will take a hotter solvent like lacquer thinner. Please remember with any solvents to use only with good ventilation and wear some gloves. If this does not work you may want to lightly spot sand the areas. Match the sealer sheen and reseal the piece of molding. What's the best way to get paint off of wood trim?
Paint remover and furniture refurnishing chemicals should work. You can also try using a heat gun to melt the paint and just peel it off. If you don't want to invest the $20 on a heat gun, use a hair dryer on hot. It might take a little longer, but you'll get the same results. Once the paint is pliable, it should peel right off...no chemicals.
There is a product in Hardware stores called Homer Formby's, try it. It is suppose to take layers and layers of paint off easily.
Well old paint on the wood wont be easy to get off and harder to get off if its alkyd(oil based)

The problem with a paint remover(most now adays stink)is that they don't work well and they most likely will remove the finish along with the paint.

I have found that if you are satisfied with something that looks good you can easily cover over the affected areas using a stain that is a bit darker than what is on the wood.

If the moldings are real wide you might only have to darken up the edges,if not you will have to go over the whole thing--NOW use a wiping stain or a gel stain and apply with a brush and get it even-on the edges you wont notice it.

that's the most cost effective way to go and the easiest way for a rental.

now if you are picky you have no choice but to strip all the edges and flats and refinish the wood being care full not to get stripper on the wall-use blue tape-it releases without taking the finish off the wall(to mad-you will have a bit of seepage no matter how well you tape it)

take care not to get stripper on the floor

let it sit,it will bubble up and scrub with steel wool(wear gloves)

neutralize the wood with the recommended agent read back of stripper can

re stain the wood a bit darker than it was

    varnish it

its way easy-er to camouflage it in step 1

I am painting my old wood siding, can I use an oil primer and latex paint? Which is better?

My wood siding is very old and dry, I want to seal it so the paint won't be absorbed into the wood and it will be better protected.I am painting my old wood siding, can I use an oil primer and latex paint? Which is better?
The only primer to use, in my mind, interior or exterior, is Kilz original. It is oil, actually alkyd, based. Technically they don't make oil-based products anymore. That aside, it is the only primer I recommend - ever.

How old is very old? Also, what is the wood? If it is German pine, it doesn't matter what you do, it will peel. German pine NEVER stops oozing sap, or at least it hasn't in most house I've seen it on (some as old as 1852). However, it wasn't commonly used in homes built in the 20th century.

Get as much of the old finish off the siding. If it is very old, you will have lead-based paint on it. Make sure to wear a respirator when scraping / sanding. Get as much off as possible with scraping so it stays in large pieces. Make sure to have plastic dropcloths underneath you as you work to catch the pieces and keep the paint chips from getting into the ground.

Once that is done, wash with a mixture of bleach and water. Typically 1/4 cup bleach per gallon of water is what is recommended, but unless there are serious moss and/or mildew issues I use 1/4 cup bleach per two gallons of water.

After that thoroughly dries, prime with the Kilz. If you get down to bare wood that is quite dry, do two coats. This, being alkyd-based, cannot be sprayed.

Once the priming is done, you can top coat with whatever you want. Primers do not have the high alkaline levels that paint do, so latex paints will bond to the primer. I would suggest a good, 100% acrylic paint. It will hold it's color better, and will form a nice thick coat on the outside. I would suggest doinng two coats of this as well, although if the right color is used you can get away with one.I am painting my old wood siding, can I use an oil primer and latex paint? Which is better?
No if you use oil primer use oil paint.
use the oil primer.....it'll soak in. and do better......the latex just sits on top. and will get rubbery after a while......
About 5 years ago we went thru this process and had so many suggestions. We had dark green wood siding and stayed with the same color.

We used an oil based primer after caulking and repairing all cracks and holes.

We were able to use an acrylic latex exterior paint over that with great success.

The previous owners had told us they were painting every year. Our 5 year old paint job still looks great!

We contacted an old friend that is in the house painting business and he had recommend the materials.

    Good Luck with your project!
I would use oil primer, and oil base paint.
You are on the right track. An oil based primer would be better for sealing your old, dry wood as it is superior to latex based primers for penetrating and sealing this type of substrate. Not to knock anyone, but Kilz would NOT be the primer to use. Kilz is cheap, is not recommended as a whole house primer and it is made to be used indoors or to spot prime outdoors. It will not penetrate as deeply into the wood fibers as a better oil based primer made for this purpose. An oil primer with linseed oil would deliver more of what dry, thirsty wood needs. As for a finish coat, you can use either oil or latex acrylic paints with the latter being much better. Oil is rarely used any longer for exterior painting for a reason. Oil based exterior paints over wood tend to chalk, peel, blister and fade more quickly than a good acrylic paint. The acrylics offer a durable and flexible film, handling the expansion/contraction that exterior siding goes through with temperature changes. Take extra care in doing the necessary prep work in order to build a good foundation for your finish coat and you will be rewarded by not having to it all over again in the near future.

What is the best way to remove 2 layers of paint from a wood toy box?

It is pretty old and I want to remove the paint and then stain it. Any suggestions? What is the best way to remove 2 layers of paint from a wood toy box?
I would strip it myself. You said ';old'; and ';toy'; which makes me suspect lead paint, which is not good on something children touch.

I like the orange stripper, but then each are pretty equal in stripping power. The sheet strippers are nice of you can afford them. What is the best way to remove 2 layers of paint from a wood toy box?
Paint strippers are messy but so is any other method of removing paint.Strippers are the way to go. At the DIY stores (Lowes, Home Depot, Hardware Stores) they have paint 'stripper'. It's a liquid that you brush or towel onto a painted wood surface, leave for a few minutes and the paint will bubble. Then you take a putty knife and scrape the paint residue away. You will probably need to sand it to get a really smooth surface then stain. The stripper I've used before was called Red Devil, but there are several on the market.

sand it if you want paint to stay on more than a month or two

Correct to all of the previous answers, although I'm going to tell you exactly what you need.

    Go to Lowe's paint department.

    120 or 200 grit sandpaper

tack cloth to wipe up grit left from sanding

    Valspar Gray spray primer

Valspar Black Gloss or Semi Gloss spray paint

Sand it just enough to rough it up. Wipe off the dust and grit with the tack cloth. Use the gray primer (since you are using black, gray primer will give you the best hide and/ or coverage).

Then Spray paint with your semi gloss or gloss spray paint.

    Good luck! :)
if it has been waxed or polished or has a waterproof stain on it you will need to sand it as it may not cover properly nif it cannot be absorbed by the wood.

How do you get paint off of wood?
water, just wet a cloth and scrub it,

    don,t let it dry.

How do I get rid of primer paint on laminate wood floor?

I need help. I spilled prime paint on laminate wood floor yesterday and I don't know what I can use to get ride of the paint without damaging my laminate wood floor. I tried scrubbing with a rag but it didn't come off. Any advices would greatly appreciate. Thank you in advance. How do I get rid of primer paint on laminate wood floor?
It depends on what type of primer you used. If the primer was latex, then start with the least abrasive solvent such as D Natured alcohol. This is less likely to strip the stained floor than Oops. Use the Oops if the Alcohol doesn't work.If you do happen to remove some of the stain, you may can match it with some from Home Depot. How do I get rid of primer paint on laminate wood floor?
If the primer is latex, they make a product called Oops or something like that - it'll take off old latex paint, even from carpets - and you'll never know the mistake was there. You might need to use a sharp edge covered by a cotton rag if the primer got into any seams of the flooring.

  • I am painting my old wood siding, can I use an oil primer and latex paint?

You have to sand it my dear. Use 60 or 40 grit ,and it won;t take forever. What did you do it for? Wished I had a barn.
Just have the whole thing sand blasted or maybe even water blasted or maybe just get yourself blasted so you don't give a damn...

IF it was YOUR barn, why would you get in trouble?

Depending on the material, overlaps, size, type of paint etc. you could:

    1. Sand blast, CAREFULLY, (so as NOT to cut the wood more than minimally.)

    2. Sand, preferably with power sander.

    3. Use a paint stripper and then power wash, (EXPENSIVE).

    4. Use wire brush and/or scraper (works best on CHEAP, chalky paints!)
Why can't you paint over it with the barn color? If you sand it off, you're still going to have to paint the sanded part!! Same thing if you use sand blaster or paint stripper - unless your barn is unfinished wood (unlikely), you'll have to paint this bare part anyway.

How do i remove old paint form wood?

i dont have paint remover wondering if there is another wayHow do i remove old paint form wood?
You can buy a quality scraper; get one with a replaceable carbide blade. The blades are expensive, but are the only kind that I find cuts the paint well. [I scrape a lot of old paint!] The scraper I use most has a blade about 2'; long and the blade is 2-sided, so you can flip it over when one side has dulled. And when scraping, try different angles at which to hold the scraper; the angle at which the blade meets the paint, makes a difference!

You can also use a heat gun. Some will caution you about paint fumes, but it's not to worry about. Even with lead paint, the danger comes from dust particles [which, of course, you'd get with the sanding process and should in that case wear a suitably safe mask].

A heat gun works wonders. They cost about $35; it's basically just a [hotter] hair dryer. The heat literally lifts the paint off the wood, while you scrape it away, moving small sections off at a time. I like it better than chemical strippers because it is less of a mess and it takes more of the paint off in one application. It doesn't work very well, however, on latex paint, only oil based paint. In conjunction with the heat gun, use a flat blade scraper [not the paint scraper as mentioned above].

Of course it depends on how much paint you've got to remove, but unless it's just a very little bit, the only kind of sander that will really remove much will be a belt sander. How do i remove old paint form wood?
    You can sand it off.
Depends on how many coats of paint there is. If there is only one coat you can sand it, if there is multiple layers, I would use a heat gun and scraper. If you sand multiple layers, all you do is clog up the sand paper, that could be expensive. Or you can go chemical and use paint remover which can get messy.

If you don't own a heat gun you can rent them or buy one. They cost about $60.00
sand or scrape both work well just becarful not to damage the wood by working to long in one spot.

Good quality parquet is usually about 3'; thick, and has NO nails, as it is bedded in smoking hot tar.

How to paint over cheap wood veneer?

I have our bedroom set that I would like to paint all a solid black color. Not shiny, just like a dull color. It is wood but on top of the wood is a cheap veneer finish. Right now the color is black and nasty orange fake wood color (two toned). I want an over all black elegant look. Should I sand it first and if so by hand or with a sander and what grit? should I use, also should I prime it and with what? ThanksHow to paint over cheap wood veneer?
moonpie said kilz but better than that would be a latex primer like bullseye123. the latex primer has better adhesion, be careful with sanding not to go throw the veneer, better to wash clean and just prime.(this is the best if it is not real wood)How to paint over cheap wood veneer?
Sand it first to provide a smooth, sure surface for your finish. Start with 100 grit, then graduate to finer (150, then 220). An electric orbital sander makes it quicker, but you can do it by hand (use a sanding block or just wrap sandpaper around a block of wood to sand flat surfaces) and there will likely be spots that can only be done by hand, anyway. Paint on primer (oil- based primer won't cause more swelling of the wood surface like water-based latex will), then after it is fully died, paint on your finish. From the range of flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and high gloss, sounds like a satin finish paint (subtle, yet elegant) may be what you want in an enamel for durability.
Just give it an allover light sanding first, then wipe it down thoroughly to remove the sanding dust. I'd sand it by hand to avoid possibly lifting the veneer if you used too much pressure.

Definitely prime before you paint. At the paint store, explain to the salesclerk what you're doing. He/she will probably recommend a tinted, high-adhesion primer.

You should probably use a satin-finish (rather than flat) paint because flat-finish is impossible to clean or even wipe. The little bit of ';sheen'; in satin-finish makes dusting and damp-wiping much easier.

    Good Luck!
i agree with voodoo and moon pie. i have repainted a lot of salvaged furniture, using the sand, then primed process and voodoo is right about using a semi gloss paint. if you've already bought the paint, you could apply a satin coat of water based sealer to make it easy to keep clean and provide a lasting finish.
I'd start by sanding away and moulding the sanded portions to an agreeable form. The stock laminate structure and integrity must be researched to the highest degree! Repairs must be performed at this base level first. Many instructions exist for the many devices of constructions. I have so much left over paint and I need to paint the wood stairs going down to the basement. I know the best paint wood be porch/floor paint but can I get away with a latex wall paint? Can I use regular latex paint on interior wood stairs?
No, you cant, latex is not made for wood, you'll need simi-gloss paint for any wood. There are different types of paint finish available for walls, ceilings, and woodwork. Most painters like water-based paints because they dry within a few hours. Latex and oil-base are the two kinds of paint for home decorating projects.

Stripping paint from wood with Heat Gun or Chemical?

I want to strip the paint from my interior mouldings in my 1916 home in Salt Lake City. What is the better way to go about this, using a heat gun or chemicals? Any info would be great, thanks!Stripping paint from wood with Heat Gun or Chemical?
You may want to think about sticking with painted trim. Not only will it be a bear to get down to wood, you probably have several layers of lead paint to deal with. If you really want to get it to wood, I'd try the heat gun first. Keep it moving so you don't scorch the wood, and use a plastic putty knife to scrape it as you loosen the paint. Hope this helps.Stripping paint from wood with Heat Gun or Chemical?
Use a heat gun first and then apply a stripper and use steel wool to remove the rest.

Just be sure it doesn't contain any lead.

How to take old paint off of wood paneling?

About 10 years ago, my mom had someone do some ';home improvements'; in her house--which for some reason, involved painting all the wood paneling white! Some of it is starting to peel, and I was wondering if there was a safe way to remove ALL of the paint while sparing the wood paneling underneath, if it isn't already ruined. Thanks! How to take old paint off of wood paneling?
The paneling's not going to be easy to strip...and the process of stipping it won't make it nice when you're done. The easy solution is to put up 1/2'; drywall right over the paneling and be done with the mess. Then you have nice new walls. It's only $8/sheet for the drywall...12 for someone to hang it and finish it...$30 for paint...and then you have beautiful walls and no stripping mess. It would be done in 2-3 days, painting included. How to take old paint off of wood paneling?

Seniors, are you one of those people who will not paint over wood paneling or cabinets?

Not me...out with the old and in with the new.Seniors, are you one of those people who will not paint over wood paneling or cabinets?
Depends on the wood. It's a sin to paint over walnut, teak, mahogany, cypress, ash and pinellas pine.If it's just 'junk wood' seal it ,primer it and use a good quality urethane ,or a single stage poly-linear urethane.Seniors, are you one of those people who will not paint over wood paneling or cabinets?
I love the look of wood %26amp; the beauty of the grain. I'm a stainer %26amp; a preserver type of a person. It sad to see beautiful wood hidden under paint. It's it's ugly wood...then by all means, paint it! Still, if a person has the time, I think that a pickled wood finish is a beautiful alternative to giving wood a full coverup. I love old houses too much! I enjoy giving ugly wood a new look by the use of different colored stains applied in a pattern...I miss having a house to practice on %26amp; a garage to play in!

Now paneling is a whole different story. If I can't get it off the wall, then I HAVE painted it...but that left me always staring at the darned lines, so I tried wall paper %26amp; they still showed, so I tried grass cloth %26amp; that seemed to cover nicely without having to first fill in the lines with spackle filler in the paneled walls. I don't like paneling one little bit!

I haven't done this type of work for a long time %26amp; I'm just itching to get my hands on some good wood again!
I sort of like a cross between natural cabinets on top and painted ones on the bottom; new hardware and countertops and wainscoating with a chairail where the paneling is. It gives the area a nice crisp look and doesn't look so dated. I even like themes on my cabinet doors. Afterall, this is the house we plan to live the remaining days in. And we want it to be as comfy for us as humanly possible. Great question!!!
I had a new home built 3 years ago and the builder was shocked that I wanted all the woodwork to be stain-grade. He didn't know that some of us think it is nicer than painted wood or plastic. I have gotten a lot of compliments on all the woodwork in my contemporary home.
As for paneling... PAINT it for G--- sakes. If you can't remove it anyway.

    Ugly stuff.

Cabinets ya , paint those too.
Good wood, strip, sand and finish it but painting over it, never.

Cheap poopy wood, paint over it.
Lol! No I am not. I just painted some paneling in our entrance way after removing the wallpaper. Wish I could afford to have someone put up drywall instead.
I haven't ever done it but I am not opposed to it. I am thinking of painting my kitchen cabinets.

Forget primer until you've scraped and rewashed, preferably not with a powerwasher. Consider at least backpriming the inside of the shed.I have powerwashed an old wood shed. the paint is still flaking off when I run a putty knife over it.?
We just finished doing an old shed this summer and it was pressure washed first then we scraped %26amp; sanded until all the paint was gone.

Now it looks great after we painted it.

I think the secret is scraping %26amp; sanding and lots of elbow grease!!!

    Good Luck!
You may want to scrape it down and go over it with a oil base primer and paint.
' When you power wash wood of course the wood is wet ,and will swell with moisture,,this will cause the old paint to be loosened , and when the wood drys it will shrink , and then the paint will start to chip, scrape as much as you can off ,then sand down the edges of the old paint ,smooth as possible and use oil primer %26amp; oil finish... It's not good to put latex paint on top of oil paint,,,it does'nt want to bond ( scrape %26amp; sand) prep work is the key to a great paint job

Is it possible to paint pressure treated wood?

i would lke to paint some wood that is pressure treated.can i paint it and get a comparable look to it as the ajoining pine?what kind of preparation,if any beyond primer latex or oil.can you use primer of one kind and paint of another?i.e latex over oil primer and vice versa? Is it possible to paint pressure treated wood?
PT lumber can be stained and painted. PT is wet with the infused chemical treatment when purchased, and should not be painted until it dries. That will require weeks or months, depending on the relative humidity in your area. Call a local paint store or search the internet for the pressure treated wood marketing etc association.

There are stain coatings (Thompson and Behr, for example, are available at HD) which are specifically intended for use on decks and other exterior PT structures.

For matching purposes it would be best if you could remove a piece of the pine you wish to match, and take it to a paint store frequented by professional painters. The personnel the such a store possess knowledge far superior to that of the clerks in big box stores. Is it possible to paint pressure treated wood?
Yes you can but let it weather for a few months first. The inside has liquid and the paint will not last--it will peal beacuse of the liquid forced into the wood. So let it weather and then prime and paint with whatever you did the rest with.

I use a solid stain on mine. You could have it mixed to match. Paint or stain--your choice.
Use a solid stain!!! Never use paint, just two coats of solid stain will do the trick and if its a deck you wont be slipping and sliding all over the place. Oh, and you wont get sued when someone falls on thier butt. Definatly use a solid stain!
because of the existing oils inside pressure treated wood..you have to bin it first..a regular primer wont work..than you may want to add some oil based primer before painting .
yes you can paint it use the same primer oil or latex do not mix.

Try not to get it on your skin. Rinse with water if you do. Sand (succession of: 60, 80, 100, 120, 220 grits) refinish as desired. 220 sanding between coats of varnish = mirror shine.

there is something called paint thin er, you can buy it in any hardware store, but first you have to scrub the old paint with also hard material, ..they can help you in the same store if you ask them ..i forget the name of it..they will know what you mean
There are many different brands on the market today. The paint on your door could be old, or have many coats. Be sure to get a big spongee and tray, scrapers, gloves and in most cases mask's. This will be the easiest way. Place a drip cloth under where you work, so you won't hurt the floor. Take it slow and do not rush. Using the spong soak the paint then lightly scrape the paint off. It will take you a while, but the reward will be worth it.

I want to paint the exterior wood trim of my house?

any suggestions on what to do first, what kind of paint is the best to buy? and should I pressure wash it?

I would apreciate it. Thanks!I want to paint the exterior wood trim of my house?
First off, ignore the advice to pressure wash. It really does force water in where you don't want water. Here are your steps (I've done this before with beautiful, long lasting results).

    1. Go to your local hardware store and get a scraper, a scrub brush, paint brushes and a small (4 in) roller, masking tape, paint of your choice, caulk in the self squeeze caulker, wood putty, sand paper, a hand sander or palm sander (borrow one from a friend if you want), and this stuff called Kilz. Make sure that you use latex paint and latex primer.

    2. Caulk the parts of your window frames and wood trim that need it. Fill holes with putty. Let stuff dry (a day or so).

    3. After everything is dry, sand the old paint down. You're not stripping, just roughing the surface. Sand even the putty filled surfaces.

    4. Wash the wood free of paint and wood dust. Use dish soap, it's fine. Rinse the wood surfaces with your hose. Spray it off good.

    5. Wait 2 days for the wood to dry. Paint the Kilz on. Let that dry. Paint with your fave color. Make sure you paint in the evening or later in the afternoon, because hot weather will cause your paint to bubble, then you have to start all over. Groan.

Hope this helps!I want to paint the exterior wood trim of my house?
pressure was first is a good idea as it gets out dirt bugs and such. you've not given much information about your house, you indicate just the trim, what about the siding etc? as usual on yahoo answers ....not enough information given. sherwin-williams is a good pait to use once you provide the other info
If the old paint is in good condition, pressure wash it, and apply a latex enamel of your choice over the top of it.

If the old paint is in bad condition (like mine is), it will probably require some hand-scraping with a paint scraper and possibly even sanding to make it look good. If you paint over paint that is starting to peel, it will make your new paint peel, and it also will just look rough. Put some time into it and you'll make it much better. Also, in this case, since you will have some areas of bare wood exposed, go with a primer first, and then with a latex enamel paint.

Also, if the existing paint is old, it could be lead-based. If you think it might be, wear a respirator when you are scraping (you can get at any hardware store)

    Good luck!
yes pressure wash. if it still wood grain it will need to be primed with oil based primer and then chose the paint. if it is a significant color change, have your primer tinted for best coverage. and sherwin williams paint works best for me
Do not pressure spray your house, it forces water into places you don't want it. Preparation should include removing any loose paint with a scraper. Applying caulking to any that has cracked. Priming any bare wood surface. And painting with 100% acrylic exterior paint in your choice of gloss. Behr sold by Home Depot is consistently highly rated by Consumer Reports.
first test your paint for lead if not found use pressure washer or sand blast it for cleaner look, primed the area and paint it whatever colour you want it to look, good luck

  • How do I paint over stained wood without having to sand?

I have a table and chair set that is very ornate. It is currently stained with high gloss over it. Is it possible to redo the set without having to sand everything? What products can I use and what is the best type of paint? I want to paint the table and chairs a simple cream color. If it is not possible to skip the sanding, do I need to sand every little thing or just the basics? Thanks! How do I paint over stained wood without having to sand?
If it's as ornate as you say, painting will take away a lot of the beauty from that. But that's just personal preference.

If the surface is really glossy, it will be difficult to get paint to adhere well. You'll need to 'rough up' the surface. You might try some of the flexible sanding pads or steel wool. They'll get into the curves and crevices better. Also consider spray paint. It will be easier than using a brush. I would go with a good enamel paint. Something that's tough but easy to clean. How do I paint over stained wood without having to sand?
You really do need to spend the time on light sanding or the paint will scratch off every time the chair/table is scraped with anything. You will be very disappointed after a very short time.

To make the sanding easier, I would suggest a flexible, thin sanding block. You can find these at all paint stores, home centers, probably even Walmart.

They are about 4';x5';x3/8'; thick. A bit rough on the sides. you can manipulate this around the curves and detail on the chairs.

You only have to do a light sanding that scratches/breaks the surface of the stain. The ';scratches'; allow the new paint to have something to hold onto.

After sanding, wipe all sanding dust off.

Then I think you should use a good quality primer as your first coat.

I like Kilz2 but you may be able to find something better that has better adhesion to shiny surfaces.

Expect to pay $15-20. for the primer.

Then apply the top coat in the color of your choice. Using a satin or semi-gloss sheen will work best on chairs.

You need to buy 1 gallon of each primer and paint. Buy latex (water-base).

Look for a good quality paint too. Olympic, behr, valspar, sherwin williams. Expect to pay $20-30. for paint.

    Good luck
yes you should remove the finish first before painting. get a can of furniture stripper there is no sanding involved and it is very affective. be careful to follow the instructions because it is also very corrosive. If your not into that you could sand the surface a little so the paint will stick better.
heres the easiest and cheapest way to do what you want. go to a paint store ( Sherwin or Porter) don't tell them anything because they will tell you anything. just get a small box of TSP. trisodiumphosphate. mix as directed in warm water. clean as directed. then apply 2 coats of any oil base trim paint. you may want to thin the paint a little with some mineral spirits. may take three coats. high gloss, semi gloss, or satin. your choice. see, much easier.
Use Krylon acrylic lacquer (indoor/outdoor) spray paint for stained or painted wood,

(also for metal) it bonds on a molecular level so you don't have to sand, just make sure the surface is free of dirt/grease.

Im painting wood for the first time & the wood seems to be drinking up lots of paint What am I doing wrong?

teew wood still looks %26amp; feels dry after two coats of paint How many more coats do you think it will take for it to look as a painted surface should look?Im painting wood for the first time %26amp; the wood seems to be drinking up lots of paint What am I doing wrong?
You should always use primer on unpainted wood before applying your finish coat. Otherwise, you could apply dozens of coats of paint, and it still won't look right. Even if the surface has been painted before, it's still a good idea to put on a coat of primer because it helps seal the surface, hide any stains, helps the paint stick to the surface better, and overall results in a better, more durable coat of paint.

If your final color is pretty dark, consider getting the primer tinted. The hardware store or paint store will do that for you.

As for brands, I like Kilz. It dries really fast, and is latex-based so you can clean up with just plain water.Im painting wood for the first time %26amp; the wood seems to be drinking up lots of paint What am I doing wrong?

Well to start if it has a finish you will want to sand it down before you whip out your paint brush. This can be very tedious and tiring. You might want to consider getting an electric sander or the attachments for your drill if you have one. It will make the task easier and faster.

Then you can do a black solid paint or you could consider doing a black stain. The said will keep that wood looking appeal but give you the color you are looking for. It's up to you. Hope this helps and good luck! How do I paint my solid wood bedroom suit black?
does your wood have any paint or stains on it now? you can try to remove it with different products (if its paint), or if its stain i think its permanent but you could probably just paint over it. i would use the paint rollers to paint it, but i've also seen people use those paint guns to paint faster.

but here are the steps i would use if i was going to paint on unsealed wood:

1.add a sealant to the wood (i think it would give a more uniform coat this way)

    2. let dry

    3. add paint

    4. let dry

    5. repeat if necessary
why do u want to paint ur bedroom black? hm...okay well...

sand it down to make sure there are no weird cracks or bumps on the walls, like tape from pictures or whatever... then start painting because then the paint will stick to the wood better and it will look faboulous when it drys.

i just dont get why everyone is painting things black? lol gothic?..
first you need to have everything clean properly from dust, then get a bonding primer and cover entire area evenly, let fully dry, then if its furniture you should use glossy paint.

I've got a bookcase from Ikea that I would like to paint. It is birch veneer. What kind of paint should I use? will I need to sand it first? What is the best way to paint a cheap wood-veneer bookcase?
I'm not sure if you can paint veneer. You would definitely have to sand it first. Be sure and paint it with primer after sanding. If the primer will stick your paint will also. You might want to try it in a hidden spot before you tackle the whole thing. If painting won't work, you could buy one of those kits that uses the torn paper and polyurethane adhesive. I'm not sure what it's called, but most places like Lowes, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart carry it.(Fairly inexpensive) This stuff will stick to anything and will provide a durable finish. Good luck!

I am getting ready to paint an unfinished wood toy for my grandson, what sort of paint should I use?

I considered using 'kills' as a base paint then stopped short of actually using it, is an oil base coat going to be harmful? should I just stick with latex? acrylic? and what kind of sealer should I use?I am getting ready to paint an unfinished wood toy for my grandson, what sort of paint should I use?
Acrylic. It is water based, non-toxic and takes well to wood. Seal it with gel medium or decoupage glueI am getting ready to paint an unfinished wood toy for my grandson, what sort of paint should I use?
You should use an acrylic paint. You can find ones at walmart or michaels. The apple barrel craft paints are $.44 at walmart and are fantastic for painting on wood. For sealants there are a few different options. You will have to check out labels and check to make sure they are non toxic. First you could use a sealant called modge podge. It is a glue/sealant, and it will be a shinier coating. Your second choice would be just a spray sealant sold at craft stores. I would recommend nylon brissel brushes. The natural brissells often come out while you are painting. If you want to do a base coat just use a tannish color of paint close to the natural color of the wood. You don't have to do this, if you choose not to, you just have to do an extra coat or 2 of the colors of paint that you have chosen.
what ever you like. Just make sure it does not have a strong smell or peels easily.
Please make sure that it is unleaded. If the paint contains lead and the child chews on it, it could cause lead poisoning. Just ask at any paint store. they do make special paint for kids.
you need something that is non-toxic. I am a gramma and know if you consult with a reliable paint store, they would be able to give you more reliable info . the best toys are the ones we make with love for our grand kids.

if yes, am i just going to paint over it or do i have to sandpaper the surface before painting? Can you paint over a wood that has been coated with varnish?
Varnish is a term used very widely to describe any old clear finish, but it's not neccessarily varnish. Then sand again and paint. Can you paint over a wood that has been coated with varnish?
first of all you rub ( with sendpaper ) the wood surface and then you can use wooden primer. when primer dryed you can paint the surface one time or two times for better look.
paper it first then you can use all surface primer which will give you key to paint on.

It is magical stuff. It's the only way that i know to accomplish the task. How to remove acrylic craft paint from finished wood?
Acrylic paint, sometimes called craft paint, is water-soluble. When wet, it is fairly easy to remove with water and a clean cloth. Use hot water and lift the paint with a blotting motion.

When dry, acrylic paint forms a solid plastic that can be peeled from hard surfaces. If you are worried about scratching the surface, cover the splatter with a warm wet cloth to loosen the paint.

Eliminate acrylic from finished woodwork by applying a few drops of rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth, then scrubbing in small circles.

Remove craft paint from carpet with a mixture of laundry soap and hot water. Soak a dish towel in the soapy water and place it directly on the paint. Allow the towel to remain on the stain for a while, depending on the severity of it, then pick out any large chunks that have loosened from the carpet. Blot the moisture up with a clean towel, and vacuum. Repeat if necessary.

Remove craft paint from porous or textured surfaces by sanding with a fine sandpaper; 360-grit or finer is ideal.

Clean acrylic paint from your clothing using a spot treatment stain remover, or a few drops of liquid laundry soap. Rub the soap into the paint, and let it soak in for about 20 minutes. Then scrub in small circles to remove the paint. Repeat this process until all of the paint is eliminated. If you dry the stained clothing in a dryer, it will set the paint and make it much more difficult, if not impossible, to remove.

How can you get acrylic paint off a wood table?

My kids were painting Christmas ornaments and they used wax paper under the paint. Some white paint seeped thru the paper and on the table. Is there anything that will take it off without destroying the finish on the table? How can you get acrylic paint off a wood table?

If it just happened today, the paint probably hasn't cured. You can use warm soapy water and scrub with a gentle scrubbing sponge, the kind you'd use on a non-stick pan. Or, if it's not a lot of paint, just use your thumbnail. If the paint is stubborn, let the water sit for a few minutes.

Can you directly paint wood with acrylic paint without treating the wood first?

I'm pretty sure you can but then the wood might look like crap in the end. so then it's probably just better to treat it first. Can you directly paint wood with acrylic paint without treating the wood first?
If you want to paint with acrylic on wood first paint the wood with a solution of PVA adhesive and water (1 part pva to 5 parts water). This will seal the wood and prevent your colour from soaking in. Leave the wood for 24 hours to thoroughly absorb the PVA. Test a small area- if the acrylic still soaks in use another coat of the PVA solution.

it works for me!Can you directly paint wood with acrylic paint without treating the wood first?
Applying a coat of wooden polish before actually you start to paint on wood may cater your need to paint on with acrylic paints. This will prevent the absorption of your paints.
You can, but the wood will soak up so much paint that it would cost more and be more time consuming than treating it first. I have learned this lesson the hard way. :(
The best treatment for wood before painting with acrylics is a primer to seal the wood so the paint wont bleed into it. If you are planning on putting a clear sealer over your work when you are done, to protect your labor, put one coat on the wood before you start. Alternatively there are mediums that can be mixed into the paint to keep it from bleeding.

Most folk art painting is done on cheap, soft wood and the paint provides a protective coating for the wood.
yes only if it is natural and not previously painted
    yes
Yes. Yet the wood would obsorb the brightness and saturation of the colors.
if you want it a little more permanent treat it first

What is the best way to strip paint from wood furniture.?

If its paint and not stain, I used a brush on paint remover, waited bout 10-15 min. The remover will blister the paint and you can use a scraper to remove the goop. Use glove when working with paint remover, it'll eat up your skin. After that, sand the residual paint left over to the bare wood. What is the best way to strip paint from wood furniture.?
Sand paper is the safest way to remove the paint from wood furniture however it is very laborous and if the furniture is thick and sturdy and if its a table with a flat bed and straight legs the normal carpenter chistle the removes tiny flakes of wood can be used but here you are losing small amount of wood and also this cannot be applied on furnitures like chairs and curved / design carved ones and one has to only use a sand paper. There are also some chemicals that would remove the paint and you could also try them and this would be the best option provided the cost is affordable.

How do you get paint off of wood cupboards without harming the finish?

If it is acrylic paint, you should be able to gently scrape of paint splatters and the like either with your finger nail or a gentle tool that won't risk gouging the wood doors. If this doesn't work (or if it isn't acrylic paint) you can use a very fine grit sandpaper and apply almost no pressure at all. This will take time as your goal is to avoid damaging the finish, so go slow. If the varnish does get scuffed a bit, you should be able to spot-apply some to conceal the scuff - your local paint shop should be able to best advise you on which exact product would be best to use.

Good luck! How do you get paint off of wood cupboards without harming the finish?
it is a lot of work. if the grain is deep you'll never get the paint out completely. if they are kitchen cupboards, just buy new doors. better still, paint them a color you do like.

oh, I see. if it is oil paint I would use white spirit on a cloth to soften it then scrape with the edge of an old credit card

depending on the design of the doors, you may be able to take the hinges off and turn them around, so the inside becomes the outside

if it is emulsion, use water and a cloth or a small brushHow do you get paint off of wood cupboards without harming the finish?
I assume you mean without harming the wood, as the paint is the finish.

The only true way is to sand the paint off with fine sandpaper. Chemical strippers can raise the grain, and dissolve the glue joints.

However, most cabinets are too large, and have too many crevices to effectively sand. The next best option is to use a chemical stripper that is brushed on, (not a chemical dip)
    i used rubbing alcohol, .

    try it.
