There are many different wood stains on the market these days. They come in a variety of colors but most all of them, water based or not, are best applied with a rag. Some of the better ones on the market can be applied with those sponge brushes however, with little or no need to wipe off. Your wood would just need a light sanding for smoothness. Is there such a thing as sheer paint for wood?
I agree with deb. Or you could use a medium sized brush. That always works. Just make sure that you do a good sanding, so that it is smooth, so the finished product will look good. Ive done alot of staining when I was doing painting and drywall and the brush seems to do the best job.

There are water based stains on the market. But if you want to make something look good, it takes work.
Maybe lacquer?
