What would be the best treatment for rough cut soft (spruce) wood? stain or paint?

We have a new baby barn and were told to let the wood dry out then do something with it so it wont rot. We read a few bottle of stain but they said they only lasted 3-5 years. Maybe it was just those brands, but we want something to last a long time, maybe paint? stain just reapply every five years if you painted it will last just about as long as the stainWhat would be the best treatment for rough cut soft (spruce) wood? stain or paint?
I would stain. It is very easy to slap on another coat in a few years. Much easier than scraping paint for repainting. I have seen deck stain last for 10+ years.
