What pattern should I paint the wood floors in my Living room?

I have diagonal paneled walls painted Montgomery White (by B. Moore) so I don't want checkerboard pattern because I think it will be too busy.





Also, do you have any color suggestions? I'd like a brown/dark-neutral color palate.

The diagonal wood sounds a little modern. If you want beachy, whitewash the floors and put a border of gray or a bluegray about 3'; wide and about one foot in from the walls. If you want a little formal, pick a stripe pattern or do a trim in a fern stencil. Maybe a soft bluegray background and a dark brown fern or something you like for a border. Neutral goes into a lot of other areas of color. Soft blue and brown or soft green and brown are good colors. Touches of a little black in a room will ground it. Green is good. Dark green with a little brown affect.
