You will be applying a sealer which will protect the wood from water, sun and mold. The sealer is called a primer. Some people use the first coat of paint as a sealer. In other words they don't buy or use a primer like Zinsser.

Staining is highlighting the wood grain by wiping it with a dye. Bleaching lightens the color of the wood. Varnish puts a protecive coat on the wood surface.
