Is it possible to remove paint from wood?

I purchased very expensive dark wood for kitchen cabinets, cupboards, windows, bedroom and bathroom doors. Due to very poor communication, the contractor had all of the wood painted white! Is there any way to remove this paint and stain the wood instead? Would it damage the wood? And how long would the process take?Is it possible to remove paint from wood?
