How does one paint wood that has a photo finish on it?

I want to paint what I presume is dark wood that has a finish on it that mimics walnut. I would like to put a neutral colour on it. What kind of paint would I use (it is trim) and what preparation is required? How does one paint wood that has a photo finish on it?
Sand lightly to provide a key (degrease with sugar soap if it has had polish on it) and use an oil-based undercoat. Some people may tell you acrylic paint is fine, but the risk of it failing is far higher.
