How do I paint old wood paneling?

I want to paint my old panneling a lighter color, but I would like to preserve the grain. I've seen it done in white, but don't know the technique or what kind of paint to use. Are there any disadvantages? Dry wall is not in my budget. How do I paint old wood paneling?
First lightly sand it to knock the sheen off of it, then clean it with a TSP or something similar. A good primer coat and then a finish coat should take care of it. Don't use a cheap roller, you get what you pay for.How do I paint old wood paneling?
You have to sand it down (very messy and then fill the cracks in with wood putty and sand that down to join the edges and leave a flat surface. You have to really sand it well and sometimes that doesn't work well because the people who stained it used a mixture of paint and stain. The you will need to texture the walls and then paint. Having done that, it is better and much cheaper to simply remove the paneling which is simply nailed to the studs and put up sheet rock. It seriously costs half as much and looks great.
First of all you need to be sure that it is real wood - a lot of paneling was a picture of wood. If it is real wood then you would strip it as you would refinishing furniture. The color of the wood when striped will decide how light you can go.

If you have the fake paneling you can paint it. There is a ';wall paper'; that you can put on over the paneling to to get rid of the grooves.
Just make sure the paneling is very clean. Then use a good quality primer paint and two coats of finish paint. This will cover the grain. I don't know anyway to preserve the grain. I did my paneling this way and it has looked great for years. Much less expensive than replacing with drywall.
