Do I need to paint my timber stairs with any particular wood paint?

Or is normal satin wood paint ok? I will not be covering them with a carpet or anything so it will need to be reasonably hard wearing!Do I need to paint my timber stairs with any particular wood paint?
I agree with the answers before me however I would like to add that there is a product to add to the last coat of paint to prevent slipping. Painted stairs can be slippery with socks and slippers on, so I suggest this product, I forget the name but it is like a very find sand and works wonderfully. You should be able to find it at any paint department.Do I need to paint my timber stairs with any particular wood paint?
The top coat you need for wear is done last and the stain is good to even out the appearance. It will make the wood look better. The finish will lift the stain and make it muddy looking if it is not completely dry. Any traffic or touching during the drying period will show so avoid that. That the general description of the job.

There are many products and it is a good idea to have a general idea what you want and read the label to see if it is going to work for you.

Some products are latex and for stairs I do not recommend that and my description it is all about oil, but the other way that may seem like a fit is min wax stains and finishes but to match color could be a problem min wax has fewer colors to choose from. I mix two or three colors to get a match sometimes. The stains that will penetrate and penetration finishes give protection and can be maintained well. Read the label id the best advice.
if its bare wood use wood primer, then undercoat then use the satin wood paint
