What's the best way to paint wood paneling?

We had very dark paneling in our family room, I painted it white and although it took two coats to cover, it looks great and has been on the walls for at least five years now with no problems

Someone told me to first paint it with Kilz , but I thought I would try it without Kilz as it is expensive. It worked. What's the best way to paint wood paneling?
You need to use a good primer/stain blocker first to prevent wood chemicals from bleeding through, then a quality latex in you favorite color will finish it nicely.
DON'T PAINT IT!

Maybe a light stain, wax or poly.
I've painted wood paneling before, and got great results.

First, you'll need to lightly sand the paneling, to give it some ';tooth.'; This will help the paint to adhere properly. You'll need to do some light cleaning after this stage, because you'll want to remove the dust from your work area.

Next, give it a coat of good primer. My personal favorite is Kilz Total One primer. This will seal the paneling and leave a surface that paint bonds to very well.

Finally, follow up with your favorite color of paint.

Good luck to you! I know that you'll be happy with the results!
2 coats of primer to seal in all the oils from the paneling. Then cut in the grooves with a trim brush and go over it with a small foam roller. Back roll or use the trim brush to catch any drips in the grooves (they're inevitable).
