Can I paint the surface of wood uses a paint other than paint which made special to paint wood?

Sorry for any grammar mistakes. Can I paint the surface of wood uses a paint other than paint which made special to paint wood?
Any oil, acrylic or latex paint will adhere to wood; although I would suggest using one of the latter two as the oil will take a lot longer to dry.

Any wood surface needs to be cleaned and-or sanded well before you paint anything on it. It would also be best to prime the surface first with a water-based primer, such as gesso. It will not only seal the wood so that it won`t suck up all your paint but will also give the paint something to grab onto and give you a clean white surface which will allow the colours to appear brighter and crisper. There are also tinted primers and gessos that can be used.

Once the piece has been painted and is dry you need to seal it with a topcoat. Make sure the sealant is designed for water-based, latex or acrylic paints. Depending on what the painted piece is going to be used for I would suggest putting on at least 2-3 coats. Topcoats or varnishes come in many different finishes including matte, satin and glossy. There are both brush on and spray versions available, although I would suggest using a spray. It is less time consuming. Just make sure it is done outdoors or in a well ventilated area and that you are careful to not spray too closely or too heavily so as to avoid streaks and drips. Can I paint the surface of wood uses a paint other than paint which made special to paint wood?
Yes you can. However, if it is pine or oak wood, you need to use a product that will stop any bleed through of pine/oak resin...a product like ';Kilz';. It is essentially a primer, but blocks the bleed through of resins into your coloured paint. You don't say if there is any stain or paint on the wood currently??...if there is, you should sand off the stain and any reside of paint first. Prime, then two coats of a good latex paint.
