You have to sand the finish off first. If you want it to be archival and last you will need to gesso the board, sand, gesso again, etc. You should do this process 3 or 4 times...the more the better. The more times you gesso, the smoother the surface is. You can buy gesso at any art store. Acrylic gesso is fine...there is oil based gesso but more expensive. Unless you are painting impasto...the acrylic gesso will hold up just fine. Good luck! What would be the process if I wanted to paint on wood?
Well you would want some sort of grip on the wood. Of course you will sand it first even with a finish but not very much. You really just need to paint Gesso on top of it. That should be a good set up. I paint on wood but I use acrylic which dries and sticks alot easier then oil which is a little tougher. You will just have to play with it.
There is great, involved information on these websites.
You will need to sand off the finish, and then you are all set.
