I live in a council house and all the woodwork was painted battlship grey. I've painted over it, but I've now decided that it really needs to come off. Trouble is, there is some brown sticky stuff at the bottom of all the layers of paint, it looks like tar. I've tried blow torch and nito mors paint remover stuff, but neither one is really effective.
Anyone know of anything that's really good at shifting it?What is the most effective way of removing old paint from wood?
The back stuff sounds like varnish, it goes black when heated. No easy fix nitromors or any other paint remover is the only way. If you are able to remove the wood, you could have it dipped most areas have a professional offering this service. What is the most effective way of removing old paint from wood?
Hot gun will heat off pain then you sand it with a sander. You can hire them for little money and do a good job.
use a power washer.
lacquer thinner and steel wool. not paint thinner it's no where near as affective.
use a heat gun %26amp; a small scraper, this will take it doen to the bare wood removing all old paint, includeing lumps %26amp; bumps, just like starting on a fresh canvas.
Godd luck
White spirit. It is probably bitumen based. It will be messy.
the tar is probably old varnish, I use a heat gun to remove the paint and some of the varnish, then I spread a water based stripper to disolve the varnish - use a putty knife to remove it then wipe it down thoroughly with water
*Naptha....(a paint thinner)...... will do it.
A heat gun and scraper and patients
If its sticky it means some coat(s) hadn't hardened properly before another coat was put on top. Try cleaning it with thinners (if turps subs doesn't work), Once you get rid of the sticky then go back to the nitromors
just doing the same thing myself, using a heatgun this time it works well and only cost 12 quid.
