What paint do i use to paint on wood and what kind of wood should I use to paint on?

I want to paint on a wood that i will also use as a table top! I will end up covering it up with a piece of clear acrylic after so it can be used as a table. My question is what kinda paint should i use for the piece of wood? what precautions should i take? i dont want the wood to show so how should i prepare the wood? any suggestions? What paint do i use to paint on wood and what kind of wood should I use to paint on?
I don't see what would be wrong with using an acrylic-based gesso or primer to cover the wood - either would be a good ground to give you an even smooth surface. Multiple coats are always better than one. If you apply one coat, let it dry then sand it smoother and clear away the dust to give yourself another clean surface to go back over. You can apply however many coats you want to get the surface smooth enough to your satisfaction.

The wood I've painted on has been for oil paintings prepared with gesso grounds, and the luon and masonite I've used before have been good surfaces. Luon and masonite are both pretty cheap and you can get it at any hardware store, I would imagine. If you go for masonite, get untempered if you can. I would imagine you could use any wood you found that you liked and could afford as long as you gessoed/primed it really well and gave yourself a nice surface to work on.

And I would recommend any acrylic based paint, just for simplicity and ease for cleaning up. Any oil based paints would require a paint thinner and can have hazardous fumes if you're not in a properly venilated area and are usually not as easy to clean up as acrylics. Acrylics dry faster and are cheaper, especially if you get those craft tube paints at a hobby and craft stores - it's easy to find them for $.50 or less most places! What paint do i use to paint on wood and what kind of wood should I use to paint on?
You can use pine as far as wood goes...actually, pine is one of the cheapest and if you are going to paint it, it really is a matter of preference. You can use a sanding sealer over the wood first. It seals the wood and also after you sand it, it gives you a nice smooth surface to paint. I use regular latex wall and trim paint as a basecoat for most of my wood projects. Then if you want to paint a design...flowers, etc. you can use acrylic craft paints. When you are done and like what you see, cover everything with a water based polyacrylic, 2-3 coats. Everything I work with is water based and soap %26amp; water clean up.
you need to prep the wood with some kind of ground. Gesso is a ground, but it might not be the best one for what you need. Impurities in the wood will drift up through the ground and alter the color of the paint. check out www.goldenpaints.com website. They have a whole area of answers for questions and products to use just for projects like yours. Good luck!
Any wood that is made of metal!
