No. Not neccecerily.. you can just give it a rub down with some sand paper. before repainting.. if you do want to strip it down you can use a hot air gun or nitromors.


I have recently stripped my stairs down and found the easiest method was to remove the banister and strip it out in the garden and the ballastrauds i got them dipped at the grand cost of 50p each!
Layer over layer of paints do not give/leave a better finish. It is always good to remove the earlier layer if you have to give a new look, specially when you want to apply lighter colour over darker one.


Best way is to remove it by burning with a blower as scrapping alone will again not leave a better surface.


Scrapping with a sharp edge or broken glass piece is best. Be careful not to scratch deep into the wood.


After scrapping burn it, use Sand-paper and apply paint.

Sweety it depends on the condition of the old paint.if it's chipping or cracking you will have to strip the old paint..but if the old paint is in good condition,you will have to lightly sand the wood and clean them before painting...

If you dont want to strip it before you paint. just sand it down a little, this will help the new layer of paint to cover it without to many coats. otherwise if it is not stripped or sanded then in time the new paint will peel
if ur going to paint it white u can get a great dulux undercoat it goes on really smooth with a roller
Not always. If the paint that is on there is smooth, then no. You will need to sand it though, so that the new paint doesn't peel off in a week and you have to strip and sand and paint.

You do not have to strip wood prior to painting, but you do have to remove any kind of problems such as chalking, flaking, oil or grease. Banisters get a lot of body oils, so you'll need a good cleaner.





Depending on the previous finish, a primer should be used. Latex paint cannot go over oils. Sometimes you have to try to find out. Oils aren't used too much these days, so if its new, you're probably OK.
