They are already sort of glossy, wood colored and I want them white. What type of paint should be used to paint wood grain kitchen cabinets?
You need to sand the ';Gloss'; off of the existing paint in order for a primer to stick properly. Use a med to fine grain sand paper for this because you don't want to scratch anything, just buff off the gloss.
Remove the doors to do this.
Make 100% sure that ALL dust has been removed from all details on the door.
Coat with a primer, allow to dry between coats.
Paint with a paint of your choice, multiple THIN layers are FAR FAR better than a single thick layer that can 'Glop'.
You could also measure ALL the doors and go to Ikea or Home Depot etc. and purchase new doors...
Or, if the doors have no detail on them and are flat, you can cover in a sheet of vinyl in the color/texture of your choice.

You will need to clean the cabinets with TSP and then use a deglosser or lightly sand with fine sand paper. Wipe down with denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol(next to rubbing alcohol and cheaper). Apply 2 coats of water-based kilz-it and paint using an enamel paint for durability. If you can find the paint in a can for the cabinets and the same brand paint in a spray can for the doors and drawer fronts I would do that. Just get the same sheen in both.
Use a high quality gloss, i wouldnt paint it a color.
If you really want them white just get some new cabinents. It doesnt look to good when painted.

you want to sand down with a fine paper -- then paint with a nice silk-sheen washable white, kitchen/bathroom paint... Gloss white will look tacky!
Use a primer then use high gloss white paint for kitchens. (excellent scrub ability).
