I am unsure of what type of wood it is . .possibly pine. i bought it from a furtniture store, unstained. It is currenty wood stained a dark cherry wood colour. i have had it like that for years and I am getting evry bored with it. I want to paint it an antique white or a chocolate brown. What type of paint should I use, and what has to be done to prepare? What type of pain t can I use to paint my wood dresser?
first thing you need to do is sand Little 120 or 180 grit paper

next USE( B I N) PRIMER/SEALER red label can not blue label

it is made by ZINSSER clean up with denatured alcohol . Then use any good latex interior paint ,to coats 2ND coat use a foam brush for a smoother finish do not use kills If current finish is in good shape you might not need to sand but i always do you need to liteley rough it up all materials can be bought at home depot or Lowe's a quart of each should do itWhat type of pain t can I use to paint my wood dresser?
If it is varnished you will need to remove the varnish by sanding or using a stripper (paint stripper that is!)

Or that, or if it is not varnished, you will need to clean it good. Just use some warm water with a splash of soap or cleaner. Or wipe it with some alchol (like rubbing alchol)

You can then paint with standard household latex paint, or spray paint.
If it is stained a dark color it will need to be primed with an alcohol based primer, like Kilz. Then use an oil based finish in your choice of finish, gloss, semi-gloss or satin. Don't use an acrylic as heavy objects placed on it will tend to stick.Always read and go by the directions.
I like to use oil base when I paint furniture as I find it's more durable. Sand the piece until it's smooth and all the old finish (different from the stain) is basically removed.
