Is it possible to paint spruce wood?

We are purchasing a home that has a spruce tongue %26amp; groove ceiling. Would it be difficult to paint it?

Thanks! Is it possible to paint spruce wood?
Ok, if you see a shiny finish to your ceiling then the answer is yes, you have a sealer on it. Most likely oil based.

Protect your floor with drop cloths...

You will want to sand this with a fine grit sandpaper. 300 to be on the safe side. After this use a tack cloth to wipe up all the particles left on the ceiling after sanding.

If you are going to paint it, I strongly recommend an oil based primer. Oil based primer tends to work better on wood surfaces especially if they have a glossy sealer on them already.

Go to Lowe's Buy a primer in a red can called Zap (also has less of an oder than Kilz original and Kilz odorless). It's around 9 dollars a gallon. New stuff, works great. This product dries in an hour, you may also topcoat it in an hour with a Latex or water based ceiling paint.

Buy a good quality ceiling paint, I would suggest Valspar Ceiling paint.

Yes, eventhough you are using an oil based primer, you can put a latex based paint on top.

Good luck!Is it possible to paint spruce wood?
not difficult but not very intelligent...you going to paint your brickwork too...
Since it is already installed in your home , there is probably a finish of some sort on it. If it is a varnish or something similar you may have to lightly sand the finish so the paint adheres. Check with your local paint store professional for assistance. Good luck.

Sherwin Williams makes a primer that can go directly over varnished surfaces.
Yes, you can paint it. But, it's probably got a stain or clear coat on it. The entire ceiling is going to have to be preped.

Strippers can be really messy, so sanding would be safer for the floors below. Do a test area with a mild sand paper first, like a 400 grit, if the wood ';burrs'; step down to a 200 grit. And then seal the entire surface(after a thourough vachuming) with a primer sealer, I use Shirwinn Williams Primer Block. The stuff works great! Then paint with desired quality paint. for a smoother, nicer finish, use a spray gun. All of this is recomended before you move in, for the sanding and painting would be a lot easier, not having to cover or move the furniture aruound.
you can paint any wood if you wish.
