I prefer using a paint remover fist then a sanding sponge.
With a lot of elbow grease. If you can afford it I would have it professionally done. If not, try the heat gun. It works ok if there are multiple layers of paint. But be sure not to hold it in one place for too long or it will scorch the wood. Strippers are also an option. Walmart carries a stripper that works really well and wont burn your skin and has mild fumes. It is called citristip. Follow the instructions of the container.
