How do I paint a wood desk?

The desk is solid wood with an oak veneer on the top and sides. The desk is not an antique and has at least 2 coats of paint. I should also say I bought the desk for $2 at a surplus auction. I tried to use a chemical stripper and sanding but that would require a big chunk of money to continue. I decided to sand the surface flat, prime it, then use a latex paint, and clear coat it with Minwax Polyacrylic. The clear coat is to help protect the paint from chipping. Would this work? Do you paint experts have any comments, WTFs, or advice?How do I paint a wood desk?
sand with 120grit ,use a good primer, then sand with 220 grit. blow off all dust, apply finish paint 2 coat's DO NOT USE

Mixing types of finishes can sometimes produce problems but I think what you propose will work. The only problem is that the polyacyrlic is not very tough. An oil based finish such as an oil based polyurethane would last longer on such a surface and stand up to more abuse to resist scratching.
Get a piece of scrap wood and do what you are going to do to see if it would work...
