Can I paint over wood paneling and what type can I use?

I want to paint over the wood paneling in my home and I have found the perfect color called Arctic Wind which is grayish purple. Do I use oil base or what?Can I paint over wood paneling and what type can I use?
I just painted the wood paneling in my studio. I first did as the others suggested and washed it with liquid dish soap, primed with water-based Kilz and painted it with an eggshell finish latex paint. Use the best paint you can afford and it should only take one coat. Another helpful hint....first paint the grooves with a paintbrush, then roll on the rest. baby sis is right, I would wash the walls with dawn soap first, for insurance
use a heavy primer, like kilz, and a textured roller, so you can get into the lines on the paneling.
Just use regular water based paint after you prime it. It may be easier to spray it if that is an option due to the texture. I just moved to NC and we have wood paneling in the dining room and my sons room...I hate wood paneling. It is my enemy. I cant paint it tho and its the real stuff not the fake wood crap so I guess its not THAT bad...ok it is. But I painted the rest of the house :)





By the way, that light color is going to make your room so much bigger and brighter. Good choice. Not sure what room this is but I just want to suggest some other colors or things you could use for the decorations. Silver will go really well with that Arctic Wind as will a cream white or even a crisp white OR a gray white.
first wash the walls with a sponge mop using warm water %26amp; dawn for grease relief....then let dry thoroughly (overnight)...then put a good quality primer on the walls w/care to get all the grooves filled !.


now........you should be ready to put one coat of good quality paint on %26amp; have an even clear finish..good luck.
